Extending aid to Morocco's Earthquake Victims: Al Ansaar Foundation Calls for Your Support

Morocco, a land known for its rich history and vibrant culture, now stands in desperate need of our compassion and support. A devastating earthquake, the strongest in over a century, has wreaked havoc on this North African nation. More than 2,000 lives have been lost, and over 2,400 people are injured. As we witness this tragedy unfold, it’s our collective responsibility to come forward and provide relief to those affected.

When and Where Disaster Struck

On Friday night, at approximately 6:11 p.m. ET, the earth trembled beneath Morocco’s High Atlas mountain range, located just 72 kilometers southwest of the picturesque city of Marrakech. The tremors rippled far and wide, reaching as north as Casablanca.

The magnitude of this earthquake, measured at 6.8, categorizes it as “strong” and its shallow depth has amplified its destructive power. Such seismic events are rare in this region. This earthquake stands as Morocco’s deadliest since 1960 when a quake claimed the lives of over 12,000 people.

The Epicenter of Suffering

The impact of this catastrophe has been felt most acutely in Marrakech and its surrounding areas, with over 300,000 people affected. While historic sites bear scars, the greatest devastation lies closest to the Atlas Mountains. Reports from eyewitnesses in mountain foothill towns paint a grim picture, with some communities entirely decimated, leaving countless homes in ruins.

The province of Al Haouz has witnessed over a thousand casualties, while more than 400 have perished in the southwestern Moroccan city of Taroudant. The full extent of this disaster is still unfolding.

Rasulullah ﷺ said, ” Whoever relieves a believer’s distress of the distressful aspects of this world, Allah will rescue him from a difficulty of the difficulties of the Hereafter.”

A Nation United in Rescue Efforts

Despite damaged roads and blocked pathways, emergency workers have been dispatched to the affected regions, displaying incredible courage and dedication. In the foothills, some remote villages remain difficult to access, but rescue operations persist.

Individual stories of loss, like that of Mohammed from Ouirgane, reveal the heart-wrenching reality faced by survivors. “I managed to get out safely with my two children but lost the rest. My house is gone,” he says. Miracles are fervently hoped for amidst the rubble.

In Marrakech, fear lingers, and some residents have spent nights on the streets, unable to return to their homes. The spectre of aftershocks looms, but Morocco’s government, with its commendable response, calls for calm amidst the chaos. King Mohammed VI has shown great leadership by establishing a relief commission to aid survivors, including orphans and those who have lost their homes.

A Global Call for Compassion

The international community has rallied in solidarity with Morocco. France, Spain, Turkey, Britain, Algeria, and many others have offered their support through various means, including personnel, aid, and resources. Even in the face of diplomatic tensions, humanity prevails as nations extend their hands to help.

The United Nations, U.S. President Joe Biden, and the World Bank have pledged their assistance, demonstrating the world’s readiness to stand by Morocco during this trying time.

In this hour of need, the Al Ansaar Foundation stands with open arms, dedicated to providing relief and hope to those affected by this devastating earthquake.
